Jersey Shore Smiles - SEDATION, MEDICATIONS & NITROUS OXIDE

For patients who need a little extra help relaxing for their dental procedures we offer Nitrous Oxide, otherwise known as "Laughing Gas" or "Sweet Air". Nitrous Oxide is inhaled through a nasal mask (everyone is assigned their own personal scented mask) and places the patient in a relaxed state. Once the procedure is complete, the patient is put on pure oxygen until they are feeling normal. Patients can drive themselves to and from appointments, as the effects of Nitrous Oxide are temporary. There is a fee for this service that is not covered by insurance.

For patients who require a deeper state of relaxation before and during dental procedures, Dr. Lubitz can prescribe a combination of oral medications to reduce pre-treatment anxiety and to induce a sleepy state during procedures. Patients on these medications are monitored with safety devices and continuous observation throughout procedures. When the medications dissipate, they usually have very little, if any, recollection of the experience. Due to the sedative effects of these medications, patients require a driver companion to and from their appointments, and must not drive for 24 hours after their procedure.
